Electric-car charging stations, a LEED gold rated building and another expected in the fall, and the Student Green Energy Fund have shined an LED-lit path to a sustainable future for USFSP.
However, the phrases “green policies,” “sustainable practices,” “earth-friendly products” and “energy-efficient systems” blur distinct practices and philosophies into the same vague environmental movement.
Nic Weathersbee decided he didn’t just want to make a product for profit anymore. “I wanted what I do for a living to actually help move humanity in what I believe to be the right direction,” he said.
That direction was gardening. Weathersbee’s vision of harvesting enough of one’s own food to eat in, and teaching others to do the same, flourished into a business.
Along the I-4 corridor between the Tampa Bay Area and Orlando, there’s a multitude of different landscapes: from sky-scraping cities to cookie cutter houses to orange groves. These concrete corridors are Florida’s passageways.
But a different type of corridor is being proposed for Florida; one that we don’t get to use.
With a little over a month left of school, it is crunch time for many USFSP students. Final papers, exams, and the threat of unemployment can all create a lot of stress. But you can take a break from it all at one of St. Petersburg’s best parks.
On Saturday, March 3, 30 volunteers cleared away debris and non-native species from Booker Creek. Four shopping carts, two homeless encampments, and nearly 100 bags of litter were removed from the waters.

Florida is no stranger to invasive plant species. St. Pete’s Boyd Hill Nature Preserve has to deal with quite a few, but one stands out from the rest: it’s the water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes), and according to the University of Florida Center for Aquatic and Invasive Plants, it grows faster than any other tested plant in the world.
